2. G. A. Engel & Sons Universal Store (Photos 2.1 to 2.4) George Adolph Engel established a Company in 1888, following which he built a store and adjacent home in 1893 on the site now occupied by the Lone Pine Caravan Park (2.1, 2.2). The business grew so much that he built a new Universal Store in 1922 adjacent to the old shop (2.3). This brick building which is still standing now houses three businesses (2.4). The Engel firm was renowned for its floating storeboats which twice weekly visited the isolated residents of the Myall River and Lakes system, as well as the small settlements dotted around the perimeter of Port Stephens.

2.2: An expanded version of the original Engel store. The building was demolished to make way for the Lone Pine Caravan Park.

Most of the original lettering on the front of the building has been removed except for “Established 1888”. The impact of World War II and the development of easier road access saw the original family business close in the early 1950s.

3. Lone Pine Caravan Park The eldest son of G. A. Engel, Henry Melvin, built his home adjacent to the original Store. After the closure of the Engel business in the 1950s, the first store was demolished and the land converted into the Lone Pine Caravan Park. The present office of the park is located on the site of Henry’s house. nushop3.jpg - 7847 Bytes
