Lookout boys because this may be the first thing you notice about this game.

Once you get past that you will find a VERY decent pinball game that to the experienced pinball player seems easy at first but is a LOT of fun to play  but I want to show you that there is way more to Scared Stiff than 2 ramps and a crate.

It is also renowned for having some of the best , funniest quotes and is completely full of sexual innuendos that bring a smile to everyone's face who play it for the first time.

" Good Head, ooooh my favourite'" -  springs to mind !

Unlike my WH20 restore pages, my Scared Stiff pages will be mainly to discuss the gameplay and show you some really nice images of this game.

Having owned a Cirqus Voltaire in the past that game is FANTASTIC and it has an interactive translite with a small ball game in it.....Scared Stiff however has an interactive translite that is directly tied into gameplay and in terms of translite features is 100 times ahead of CV.

The translite on Scared Stiff is 3 dimensional and artistically brilliant - it contains a spinning spider and 16 choices on where to stop the spider that all works in conjunction with other parts of gameplay or the light you stop on 'adds' things to gameplay, I will explain it all properly later but its a good feature ONCE you understand it. For new players however it is , I believe, pretty confusing as no-one knows what image does what to the game....and to truly appreciate the game you NEED to know, I try to explain this to players who come and play it for the 1st time and we find ourselves giving up.

I will actually attempt to explain how a certain selection on this translite game ties into the playfield modes when I explain each playfield mode below.

In the meantime if you want a rulesheet for this game then go here

To keep things simple there are 6 main objectives, referred to as Tales to complete to get to the Scared Stiff Mode

You can see them here below and I will list them in more detail under the photo

 modes

Probably the best known of all the Scared Stiff Tales as The Crate is the main 'toy' on this game, it is located just to the right of centre at the top of the playfield.

Here is what it looks like , mine has brand new decals on it with mylar over the front door for future protection and I also added the RED Cliffy's posts either side.

crate

To get this Tale started ( and eventually collected ) you have to have hit The Crate a number of times in general gameplay, this is adjustable in the menu and I have mine set to hardest which requires 16 hits on the locked crate door before it becomes unlocked - there are 4 sets of 'eyes' on top of the crate that help you keep track of how far you have to go. Once all four sets of eyes are lit you can belt a ball into the crate which starts the mode.

This mode is a 2 ball multiball mode and you can endlessly score Jackpots of 250,000 points as long as you can keep both balls in play - the mode ends and the mode is awarded when you drain a ball

Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................Here is how the Translite game can assist with this mode................

You will see a Crate picture on the translite game on the left under the eyeball, if you spin the spider and stop there it gives you an 'extended crate play' .....what this means is that when you eventually reach the Crate mode on the playfield instead of the mode ending when you drain one ball the game will , for a certain amount of time - 20 seconds I think, keep feeding you new balls as you drain and keep giving you a ball back until the extended time runs out.

To complete this Tale you simply have to get the ball up and around into the bumpers and achieve a certain number of bumper hits in order to be awarded The Monsters Lab, it is something like 20 hits first time around. You have to keep your eye on things to make sure you can make shots at the correct time but.

The bumpers are located at the far top right hand corner of the playfield  at the back of the Boney Beast Ramp and are mainly reached by shooting from the right flipper and around the left 'orbit' - however this is not always open and can be blocked when you have LOCK lit or when the Deadheads are lit which means the ball will travel to the top rollover lanes but WONT proceed around to the bumpers, so this means you have to keep an eye on the lit inserts around the left orbit so you know when you can shoot all the way around to the bumpers.

Occasionally the ball will be popped out of the 'Skill Shot' hole and thrown across into the bumper area but this normally only gets one hit.

 Bumpers

Keep your eye out for the BLUE insert up the left orbit path and when it is lit it means all diverters are open allowing your ball to travel all the way around.

The picture below is the insert that lights ONCE you have achieved this mode.

Notice on the bottom of the choices is a big BLUE 'electrode' thingy that has LAB on it , and is also BLUE......if you spin the spider and stop there it gives you a certain amount of bumper hits and the bumpers actually activate as well, it is something like about 8 or 10 hits and helps you on your way to achieve this mode.

Now this Tale is quite simple to achieve I have to say.

It is a matter of simply getting the ball around the Boney Beast ramp 3 times and your done.

The ONLY thing hard about this is a choice you may have to make after the 2nd shot achieved as that lights LOCK for Multiball in the Coffin and you may like to take the shot for the lock instead depending on how your game is going.

This photo is before I fixed my Crate decals or fixed the playfield wear near the crate as well

Well it doesn't help to collect the eyes of The Boney Beast Tale....but

Take a look , there is a Beast Head up there - stop the spider on it , and you get a Beats Hurry Up that starts at 250,000 and works downwards - make the Beats Ramp shot and collect the points.

On the following page I will start to explain the other 3 modes
